Burt Shavitz and Roxanne Quimby founded Burt’s Bees in the early 1980’s in the Maine wilderness after leaving the hustle and bustle of city life behind. They loved when Burt stopped to pick up Roxanne while she was hitchhiking. Burt also learned how to keep bees and sell honey. Roxanne did an apprenticeship and found a cookbook that they used to make beeswax into candles and lip balm. Just as the forest in front of Burt’s 300-square-foot cabin turned into a turkey chicken coop, everything blossomed from there.
